What We Do

In the U.S. - Credentialing for Literacy Organizations and Practitioners in the Field

ProLiteracy’s credentialing programs help organizations, the people who lead literacy programs, and those who train volunteers to tutor adults in reading, writing, math, and English as a second language gain high-quality skills based on nationally recognized standards of program management, leadership, and training.

  • Leadership Excellence Academy: These leadership activities include workshops and online courses in topics that help adult basic education and literacy program managers become more effective. They are developed by ProLiteracy and the National Adult Education Professional Development Consortium, and are offered in partnership with state adult education agencies and providers.
  • Trainer Certification: Trainers must not only meet knowledge requirements in areas of adult education, but also must show that they can share that knowledge with the individuals they will train to work directly with adult learners. ProLiteracy's Trainer Certification System supports trainers' continued professional development through the Trainer Tool Kit, networking opportunities, online courses, and face-to-face seminars.
  • Accreditation: ProLiteracy offers the only national accreditation service in the adult education and literacy field for programs in which volunteers provide most of the instruction to adults. A program conducts a rigorous self-assessment before all aspects of the program's operation are reviewed by a peer accreditation review committee.
