Joe Theismann
Opening Address
Joe Theismann, entrepreneur and the former star quarterback for the Washington Redskins, will deliver the opening address at the 2013 USCAL on October 31, 2013, in Washington, D.C.
Theismann, who spent the last two decades working for ESPN on their NFL broadcast and the NFL Network, will speak about “The Challenge of Change,” drawing from personal experience to guide others on how to tackle change by keeping a positive mental outlook and committing to a vision that guides you to the top.
USCAL brings together hundreds of people from around the United States to work together to address low adult literacy in America and around the world. The conference theme, “Together, Leading Change,” will focus on key issues currently facing the adult literacy field, including workforce training and career pathways, citizenship education and immigration, financial literacy, health literacy, and technology and digital literacy, among others.
A 12-year NFL veteran, Theismann played in 163 consecutive games from 1974-1985 and holds Redskins’ records for passing yardage, completions, and attempts. A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Theismann led Washington to a 27-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII. He was selected the NFL’s Man of the Year in 1982 for his community service and dedication to the health and welfare of children, and he won the league’s 1983 Most Valuable Player Award. His career ended abruptly in 1985 after sustaining a broken leg during a game against the New York Giants on national television.
He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and in 2003 was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
