This article describes the development and implementation of AutoTutor, a web-based intelligent tutoring system for adult literacy learners. AutoTutor aims to improve reading comprehension skills by addressing challenges such as limited comprehension strategies, varying learner knowledge, and inconsistent attendance.
It is adaptive to individual learner performance and offers performance data for both learners and instructors. The article highlights the need for digital tools designed specifically for adult learners and provides a guide for practitioners considering the use of digital tools in the classroom.
