Financial Report
Our strategic focus inspires our teams to work together to amplify our impact and maximize every dollar.
Literacy has an undeniable impact on society as a catalyst to economic mobility, improved health outcomes, civic engagement, and human dignity.
We are at a crossroads where the understanding of literacy as a human right is gaining momentum and getting the attention it has long deserved. This is our moment, and we don’t take this lightly.
We have a responsibility to show that adult literacy and education programs work to continue the movement of growing awareness and support.
Our goal is to help ensure every adult literacy and education program has the capacity to serve every person—regardless of race, religion, gender, economic status, or zip code—with the same quality of instruction and resources.
When we level the playing field by creating equity for learners, the power of adult literacy and education will become obvious in the form of higher employment rates, upward economic mobility, improved youth literacy rates, and better community health outcomes.
Through our ongoing engagement with the field, we have a unique vantage point to react to the needs of those who are working with adult learners in local programs across the country. We heard what they needed and we acted on them and advocated to provide instructors and programs with targeted professional development, courses, funding, and instructional materials. We also finished our first full year offering frontline workers direct service through employers and our partnership with Guild. You’ll read about the impact this work has had throughout this report.
I’m so inspired by the successes we’ve seen and the building momentum to make the case for adult literacy.

There are 48 million adults in the US, and nearly 800 million worldwide, who read at or below a third-grade level. These individuals have the ability to more fully participate in society and improve their personal outcomes with improved reading, writing, math, and computer skills.
ProLiteracy’s mission is to make that happen. By supporting adult literacy programs nationwide that work tirelessly to help adults achieve their goals, we are building equity in educational access to create stronger, healthier communities through literacy.
As the leader in adult literacy practice, we are uniquely positioned to advocate for and build the capacity of all literacy programs, from the smallest community-based organizations to the largest programs and institutions, giving us the ability to reach more adults.
We provide programs and practitioners with leading edge training and professional learning, timely and relevant research, grant opportunities, and high-quality print and digital instructional tools through New Readers Press so that they can meet any adult at any level with open doors and effective support.
We help programs help adults improve their confidence, earn family-sustaining wages, access health care, and witness a brighter future for their children.
I am inspired every time I see how our work translates to a better life through literacy. The growing support for our mission is, without a doubt, changing the world.
Stephen Carr, Vice President of Development
All our work over the past year has been strategic to increase the quality of educational services for adults in need. The impact of this work is outlined in the stories below.
Our grant programs have continued to enable under-funded programs to open doors to adult learners and serve them with the best print and digital resources available.
We responded to the needs within the field and developed new instructional series to teach workplace skills and English as a second language. Looking ahead to the 2024 presidential election, we digitized our News for You Voting Guide to create an interactive course that teaches the fundamentals of our election system and voting in the US, while also improving digital skills.
And we expanded our professional development, advocacy, and international efforts—all core to who we are as an organization.
Our strategic focus inspires our teams to work together to amplify our impact and maximize every dollar.

Generous corporate partners and sponsors who believe in the power of adult literacy are a driving force of our work domestically and abroad.
Individuals, private and family foundations, and legacy donors are equally important to our mission. Our loyal supporters understand that we make it possible for adult literacy programs to serve all adults without discrimination and that, more importantly, their zip code should not determine their outcome.
Our work this year has given adult literacy and education programs improved resources, tools, and learning opportunities so that any adult will receive quality instruction and service, regardless of where they live. These efforts will continue to advance the field.
Simultaneously, we are growing our strategy to get more adults into literacy programs, thinking of new ways to reach the roughly 90% of low-literate adults who are not seeking out services themselves.
With the new PIAAC Survey of Adult Skills being released in December, we will use the new data to make the case for the need for adult literacy programs. We will use our platform to initiate honest conversations about the stigma associated with low literacy that often holds adults back from seeking services.
Through these conversations, we want to build awareness and support in new ways. We will initiate partnerships that allow us to help traditional adult education programs move outside their walls to meet adults where they’re at and in a way they are comfortable with.
We know we can create buy-in. We know we can build stronger communities. We’re not slowing down.
