About This Course
Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, distinguish, and manipulate the sounds of oral language. It’s not a skill that comes automatically to speakers of English, but it is critically important for recognizing familiar words in print and decoding unfamiliar words. In this course, instructors will define phonemic awareness, identify the eight phonemic awareness skills students need to know, learn how to assess a student’s phonemic awareness, and learn how to integrate phonemic awareness instruction into the lesson plan.
