New Materials Developed to Meet the Needs of Today’s Adults

Over the course of six years working toward her GED credential, Mildred Pearson took the math test again and again. So many times, she said, she thought about quitting and giving up.

But with the encouragement of everyone at Project LEARN of Summit County in Akron, OH, she persevered. She signed up for a math-focused program offered specifically for students who only needed to pass the math portion of the GED tests to earn their credential.

The books they use in that program: Scoreboost for the GED Test from ProLiteracy New Readers Press.

Mildred connected with how her tutor taught directly from the workbooks and how the lessons go step-by-step through solving a problem.

“It really actually breaks [each skill] down so you get a better understanding of what you’re going to look for on the GED test,” she said. “When a question would pop up on the GED test, I’d say, ‘OK, I saw that in that book, and Dave taught me how to do it like this. OK, I know how to do this.’”

And she did it. At age 50, Mildred earned her GED credential.

Our Scoreboost books across subjects have long been credited with helping prepare students to successfully pass the GED tests. In our dedication to giving adults quality materials that represent the world we live in, we revised the Scoreboost for the GED Test series this year and released a second edition with updated questions, data, reading passages, and more.

Our books are built with the practical information students need. In addition to Scoreboost for the GED Test, 2nd Edition, we developed new books to assist adults with English language learning and workforce readiness:

  • Career Power gives contextualized lessons that build employability and academic skills that adults who read at low levels need to enter an Integrated Education and Training (IET) workforce program.
  • The Long Stories Short series builds English language, conversation, and reading skills using relatable short stories about everyday life that often end with a twist.
  • What’s Next? books 5 and 6 were added to our popular ESL series to provide more practice using a phonics approach to learning English.
